Lesson 4 · Ages 8–12
The Seven Sacraments
Jesus gave us seven sacraments, special signs through which he gives us his grace.
A sacrament is a special sign given by Jesus. Through it, Jesus really gives us his grace: his life and love in our souls.
There are seven sacraments:
- Baptism: we become children of God and members of the Church. Water is poured and the priest says, “I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
- Confirmation: the Holy Spirit makes us strong to live as friends of Jesus.
- Eucharist: at Mass, bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus. We receive him in Holy Communion.
- Reconciliation (Confession): God forgives our sins through the priest.
- Anointing of the Sick: Jesus gives strength and comfort to people who are very ill.
- Holy Orders: men are ordained as deacons, priests and bishops to serve God’s people.
- Matrimony: a man and a woman promise to love each other for life, with God’s help.
The first three are called the sacraments of Christian initiation.
